Saturday was my mom’s birthday. She celebrated with her friends on the actual day, so we had our family birthday outing yesterday. I suggested the National Ornamental Metal Museum – I hadn’t been there since I was a kid, and wanted to see a specific exhibit that closes soon. Happily, my mom liked this idea. So after a delicious lunch at Bar Louie in Overton Square, we went to the museum!
The other main gallery included a collection of whimsical darts like “Dart Vader”:
We also went out to the foundry and watched a metalsmith at work. His recent projects were scattered around to look at. I was really taken with this rose:
All three of us were excited to see a realistic lobster sculpture in the last exhibit. It’s even our kind of lobster!
The Metal Museum grounds provide a beautiful view of the river. The view, and a trellis that looks like a cornstalk, were the only things I remembered about the place. But now that I’ve rediscovered the museum, I want to visit more regularly! The art is so unique, and the lawn or gazebo would be a fantastic place for a picnic. (Spring can’t get here soon enough!!)
Love that place! In 5th grade, we had a classmate and her brother that were killed in a car wreck. It was devastating to or little school. The museum heard about it and reached out to our class- they made a bench for us (for free!) that they donated to the school in her memory… It overlooks my fav part of the school campus. I’ve always loved them for that act. So kind. I haven’t been to the museum in years… I need to go back! Still loving that green jacket! :) Hurry up, Spring!!

I have never been to the Metal Museum, but now I want to go!
My parents went there a couple months ago. My dad really wanted to go since he used to like/do metal work & as long as they’ve lived in Memphis, they had never been. (he probably still likes it, just doesn’t have the time &/or energy for it.) Anyways, they had a great time. Both commented how neat it was. I don’t think I’ve ever been there…and if I have, I don’t have any recollection of that trip. I’ll have to put that on my list of things to do one of these days.
PS. I LOVE how much you love the city…and how you share all the cool things there. I don’t do/see much there anymore…but it helps to remind me…there are a lot of great things about Memphis. And I appreciate that more than I can explain. :)
